Local resident wants to get to the bottom of the Benghazi attack.
<<< Senator Merkley’s Response >>>
Thank you for contacting me to share your concern about the Administration’s handling of the September 11, 2012, attack in Benghazi, Libya. I appreciate hearing from you on this important matter.
Following reports published by the State Department, the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the New York Times, I have heard from many Oregonians who are concerned about the attack in Benghazi. The Libya attacks, which left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, require an important and thorough investigation. Former Secretary of State Clinton established an Accountability Review Board, which made several key recommendations in a report they released on December 18, 2013. These recommendations include better risk assessment, personnel and infrastructure investments, and an expansion of the Marine Security Guard Program, among many others. I am encouraged that the State Department has identified opportunities to improve the safety of our diplomatic corps.
It is my hope that that my colleagues in the House of Representatives and Senate will join me in supporting the State Department’s efforts to improve security across the board. I will continue to closely monitor its progress.
Thank you, again, for sharing your thoughts with me. I hope you will continue to send your thought and observations my way.
All my best,
Jeffrey A. Merkley
United States Senator
